At the tender age of 8, Daria Mariscal learned how to create traditional style pottery from her grandmother and aunt. She quickly mastered this fine art, and added basketry, specializing in juncus, palm and piñon pine needle baskets, to her repertoire. Daria is PaiPai Kumeyaay from Central Baja California and is fluent in both PaiPai and Koal (a southern variant of Kumeyaay). Daria, a proud grandmother of 8, enjoys the youth of her community who take interest in the knowledge of their elders and ancestors. She teaches pottery and basketry to her tribal community as well as in cultural venues in the U.S. Daria has received the prestigious 2010 Popular Art and Traditional National Award from Felipe Calderon, President of Mexico.
