Description: Fennel is not native to California and is from the family Apiaceae. It is also known as Sweet Fennel and Biscuit Root. Its scientific name is Foeniculum vulgare. It is a perennial herb and usually blooms in May, June, July, August and September. Fennel has little yellow flowers with feathery thin leaves. It is used as a medicine, to facilitate birthing, flavoring baked foods, meats, ice cream and alcoholic beverages. It also has antifungal, antibacterial and anti—inflammatory properties. According to the research of Elizabeth Windsong, the Kumeyaay would use fennel seeds to assist in digestion. The seeds would be chewed and eaten ten minutes before a meal.
