Description:         The Elderberry or Sambucus Mexicana is native to southern California, west of Texas, valleys west of Sierra Nevada from Oregon to Baja California, and in canyons. In the summer it has yellow flowers, and in the winter it has purple berries. The Elderberry needs full sun with partial shade and water. It can survive a drought when the roots are completely in the ground. The Kumeyaay name for Elderberry is kupall. According to the research of Elizabeth Windsong, the Kumeyaay used the leaves to cure skin diseases and stop internal bleeding, and the branches for flutes. Blossoms were also brewed into a tea to cure fevers.
