Its scientific name is Salvia apiana. It was called pelltay by the Kumeyaay. White sage was spiritually used for incense and smudging, when dried out. Medicinally, it was used to treat colds, help the eyes, and clear out blood as a tonic. According to the "Plants of Southern California" book, white sage was also used as food and flavoring.
