Description:         White sage is a variety of sage native to the southwestern United States, which includes the chaparrals of California. This plant is known as bee sage and is notable for its pale green—blue color in leaves and long, thin flower stems during flowering. White sage has a circular hollow stem. Its scientific name is Salvia apiana. It was called pelltay by the Kumeyaay. White sage was spiritually used for incense and smudging, when dried out. Medicinally, it was used to treat colds, help the eyes, and clear out blood as a tonic. According to the "Plants of Southern California" book, white sage was also used as food and flavoring. No notes were found on the original card from Elizabeth Windsong.
