Week 6, Specimen Mounting

In our final week of Heritage Class, the students mounted their dried plant samples. Herbarium standards were followed as they used acid free paper and a neutral pH glue to attach the dried sample to the herbarium sheet. They also included a specimen label (with common name, scientific name, 'Iipay Aa Name, location, and traditional uses), a fragment envelope, and a photo of the plant. Herbarium collections are used in the study of plant taxonomy and in preserving the historical record of flora in geographic locations over time. Each student will get to keep their mounted plant sample.
