Week 1, Heritage Class
 

During the first week of Heritage Project classes, each student was assigned a plant from the Native Plant Garden. After doing plant research, each student determined the family, genus, and species and wrote a label detailing his/her plant's origins (native or non-native to southern California), uses by Kumeyaay/Diegueño people, and if the plant has a name in 'Iipay Aa (the native language of the Barona People). The students visited the Garden to see their plant in person and to cut a small sample that would be pressed and dried during the six-week class.
