Week 2, Juncus Basketry Class

On April 21st, the Barona Indian Charter School Board hosted a basketry class for the 7th and 8th graders. Renowned basket maker Eva Salazar (Kumeyaay) from San Jose de la Zorra spent three hours with the students teaching them how to make a coiled juncus basket. The children learned how to split the dried juncus and size each piece for weaving. Eva showed them how to wet the juncus in preparation for weaving and explained how awls (small pointed tools used to make holes) are used to help make the coils.
