Barona Cultural Center & Museum

Week 1, Heritage Class
 

During the first week of Heritage Classes each student was assigned a plant sample from the Elizabeth Windsong Collection. After doing some research into their plants, each student determined the family, genus, and species and wrote a label detailing his/her plant’s origins (native or non-native to southern California), uses by Kumeyaay/Diegueño people, and if the plant has a name in ‘Iipay Aa (the language of the Barona People). The students then got to view their plant samples and transcribed the original collector’s field notes to their label content. Finally, they took current condition photographs of their plants which will be saved in the Museum’s collections management software.
