Jimsonweed

  • 'Iipay Aa Name: Kusi
     

  • Description: Jimsonweed is an annual herb with long smooth leaves and white trumpet shaped flowers. They have egg–shaped spiny seed pods that open and release at maturity. The plant is native to North America. Its scientific name is Datura stramonium and the 'Iipay Aa word is kusi. Jimsonweed has been used as a medicine to relieve asthma and as an analgesic during surgery. Kumeyaay/Diegueño People traditionally used it during the boys initiation ceremony to produce visions. It is highly toxic and must be administered by an expert, or it may be fatal.
